Arizona Wildcats junior shooting guard Allonzo Trier was named a finalist for the Jerry West Award. This award is given to the top shooting guard in the country.
Finalist! Allonzo Trier was just name a finalist for the Jerry West award. He is among nine other candidates in the running for this prestigious award including Grayson Allen of the Duke Blue Devils. The last time an Arizona Wildcat won this award was in 2015. Who may you ask? None other than Stanley “Stanimal” Johnson, who now plays for the Detroit Pistons.
Trier started this year on fire! He was named the first Pac-12 Player of the Week this season, after averaging 31.0 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game in the opening week of play. Now that’s making a statement to the rest of the country!

As the season has progressed, Trier along with Deandre Ayton, have provided a majority of the offense. Now with Rawle Alkins back in the lineup, it takes a little bit of pressure off their shoulders. Plus, the confident of Dusan Ristic on offense transforms them one of the best starting lineups in the country. Let’s not forget starting senior Parker Jackson-Cartwright and what he brings to the lineup.
Trier’s offensive efficiency has improved year after year. In his freshman season, he averaged 14.8 points per game. Sophomore season, he averaged 17.2 points per game. In his senior season, Trier is averaging 19.9 points per game, shooting 53.8% from the field and 41.4 % from three-point land. Those are elite stats and why he is a finalist for the Jerry West Award!
Over the course this season, Trier has shown that he not afraid to take the big shot during crunch time or take it strong to the basket and draw some contact. He also displayed his ability to generate his own offense with step backs, ankle-breaking crossovers or even pull up three-pointers. And when needed, Trier has stepped into a backup point guard position.
Zo also can deliver a “poster” every once in a while as well:
After coming off a disappointing ending to last season, Trier has been on a mission this season to get the Wildcats into the Final Four and a chance to win a National Championship. He keeps on playing the way he has. The Wildcats have a very good chance to make that happen.
