Arizona Basketball Associate Coach Lorenzo Romar is reportedly accepting the Head Coaching job at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California in the West Coast Conference (WCC).

We are thrilled that Arizona Basketball Associate Coach Lorenzo Romar has been offered the head coaching job at Pepperdine University. Well, we at Zona Zealots are bittersweet; we are sorry to see him leave Arizona.

Last spring, Coach Romar was concluding his 15th season at Washington when he was let go after a 9-22 season. Not only has he been a good friend of Arizona Basketball head coach Sean Miller, he is widely referred to as a coach opposing coaches would like to play for. Thus, Romar and Miller began talking about the possibilities once Romar was released, and in very little time, Coach Romar was added to the Arizona Basketball staff.

Wildcat fans were happy to have Coach Romar on the staff, and he has been a sound addition during this emotional season in Tucson. He even got the title of Head Coach when Coach Miller recused himself for the Oregon game after ESPN published yet-to-be-proven accusations about the Arizona coach and program. We know the Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies are not the best of friends, so Coach Romar had the fire needed to get the team motivated and focused for their game in Eugene.

Rumors have been swirling lately that Pepperdine has come calling for Coach Romar. According to the Arizona Daily Star, an announcement may come in the next few days. We understand, especially since he would be returning to the University as head coach. Romar was previously the Pepperdine Head Coach from 1996-1999. Who can pass up the opportunity to live in Malibu? (Although we must warn you, Coach, we hear it’s way more expensive to live in California than in Tucson.)

This month, Arizona Basketball seemed to put the tumultuous last week of February behind them while they won two Pac-12 Conference Championships, one for the season and one in the tournament. It was wonderful payback to beat UCLA to avenge for Arizona’s lone loss in McKale this year. And the icing on the cake was beating pesky USC, who was on the Wildcats’ tail late in the season as the Trojans tried to win the Conference title.

Immediately after Arizona’s Pac-12 Tournament win, the cameras panned to the bench and the impending celebration. On television, we got a glimpse of Coach Romar’s huge smile. Here is a clip of all the emotions being released; check out Coach Romar paying a visit to the bench.

We at Zona Zealots are very proud Coach Romar got to Bear Down and wear Red and Blue for the past year while winning a couple of trophies (one more would be nice). We hope he can wear the colors for six more games and wish him luck at his new job.  Oh, and one more thing: Coach Romar, Don’t go!
