Former Arizona Wildcat standout, Harvey Mason Jr, recently took his talents to live television as the music producer of Jesus Christ Superstar Live on NBC.

Multi-talented. That would be the best way to describe former Arizona Wildcat standout Harvey Mason Jr, who played for the Wildcats from 1986-1990. This past Easter, he was the musical producer behind the live production of Jesus Christ Superstar which aired on Easter Sunday, April 1, on NBC. From basketball to producing music, Mason is a man of many talents.

As a Wildcat, Mason played alongside some greats. Steve Kerr, Sean Elliot, and Kenny Lofton to name a few. You may have heard of them? Each has gone ahead to have well respective careers in basketball and baseball. Mason may not have gone on to have the basketball careers some of his teammates have had, but he has gone on to have a very successful musical career.

Mason’s athletic legacy lives on at Arizona as well. His daughter, Mia Mason, who just celebrated her 21st birthday yesterday, plays on the Sand Volleyball team. She is a Junior, so go out and catch a Sand Volleyball tournament, they are a blast, and you just may spot her mom and dad cheering from the sidelines.

Mason dealt with multiple knee injuries during his basketball career, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his love for music. Some of the talent he has worked with as a musical producer is the cream of the crop. Beyoncé, Whitney House, Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Hudson, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Mary J Blige just to name a few.

Mason has been asked to work not just in the recording studio, but also by major motion pictures as well. That’s taking your game up one notch! He even formed the Underdog Music Publishing in 2006. He was the Music Producer on the major motion picture Straight out of Compton which garnered much acclaim. Mason’s work and career are still on fire!

His latest achievement, musical producer for Jesus Christ Superstar Live on NBC, is on another level though. Mason worked with the one great music artists of this generation, John Legend, who played the role of Jesus Christ.

Talk about pressure. It’s one thing to perform inside McKale Center, but to produce a show that will be performed live on NBC on primetime, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Mason had this to say when asked by CNN about what this show was really all about:

"“It’s great entertainment. [Easter] is a day when families are together. A day when people are looking to share common experiences and have bonding moments. This is really a family piece of entertainment and art … the message is perfect for not only Easter but what is going on in our world right now and in our country. It’s a positive message and I think it’s something everyone will appreciate. Not just Christians or Jewish people or religious people or any one particular race. It has a universal message and it has universal entertainment appeal.”"

The show even got a great review from publications and celebrities on Twitter:

At Zona Zealots, we would like to congratulate Harvey Mason Jr on his latest achievement. Many elite basketball programs can say they have players in the NBA, but how many can actually say they have top not musical producers. Not too many. This is another reason why I am proud to call myself a Wildcat fan. Bear Down!
