Arizona Basketball coach Mark Phelps (we assume) traveled to Southern California to check out Mater Dei’s High School team including Devin Askew.

Devin Askew, the west coast class of 2021 6-foot-4 standout guard, is getting a lot more attention these days. Los Angeles media including Beach City Hoops and others have been following this Hooper since he was a freshman in high school. Everywhere I go, there is Devin. The Drew League, check. Pangos All-American Camp, check. Air West runs, check, runs at The Map in Orange County, check. Dinos Trigonis, Pangos program directors, called Askew, “The next biggest guard to come out of Southern California.”

He’s everywhere playing with men and holding his own. He still has three years left of high school folks and he’s already 6-foot-4. The first time I saw Askew play my jaw was on the floor, then I found out he was a freshman playing on varsity. He had a slight back strain during the CIF playoffs last year and couldn’t contribute as much as he wanted to, but he is back and ready to kill it this season.

Arizona Assistant Coach Mark Phelps was also in attendance at the CIF playoffs. Phelps knows talent when he sees it, and you can assume he sees it at Mater Dei. In fact, Arizona found Stanley Johnson at Mater Dei. Other notable Wildcats from Mater Dei: Miles Simon, Reggie Geary, Dylan Rigdon, Alex Jacobson, David Bagga (walk-on) and current Wildcat Matt Weyland (walk-on).

Mater Dei, a basketball powerhouse in Orange County, CA, graduated Bol Bol (Oregon), Michael Chang (Penn), Harrison Butler (Southern Utah), last years star point guard Spencer Freeman (Harvard) and Devin’s older brother B.J. Askew. But no worries a fresh cream of the crop Varsity team is ready to compete including Askew.

More from Basketball Recruiting

What makes Mater Dei a powerhouse? Let’s see..they won back to back to back to back CIF State Championships (2011-2014), one National Championship, 11 State Titles, 22 CIF-SS Titles,16 Southern California Regional Titles, and 33 League Titles in 34 Years

I cannot be remiss and not mention that in addition to being one of the most exciting players on the West Coast, he is such a respectful, caring and mature young man. Air West Director and Drew League Champion Coach Keion Kindred said this about Askew, “The future of LA Basketball is in good hands. Devin works diligently on his game and accepts the challenge weekly of playing at Air West with the pros.”

"Assistants from Texas, San Diego St, Stanford and Arizona were in to see the young Mater Dei team including sophomore standouts Devin Askew, Wil Breidenbach and Aussie Harrison Hornery. This team shoots lights out. Going to be fun to watch this season."

A bucket-getter, Askew is great at driving to the basket and drawing fouls.

Askew’s teammates get along very well, and we got a chance to interview the group a year ago at a Dinos Trigonis showcase in Long Beach. Actually, we had the teammates, who all stood out at the showcase, interviewed each other and had a lot of fun.

Here’s the In The Front Row interview with the Mater Dei stars of this season (Askew, Aidan Prukop, Harrison Hornery, Wilhelm “Wil” Breidenbach) from last October 2017 before he got any offers.

Matt Moreno, also Rivals, tweeted that Sean Miller and two of his assistants watched these players on Mater Dei in July. Obviously, they like what they are seeing, or they wouldn’t be coming back to watch the team again.

Here are some recent highlights of “Baby Dev” care of Long Beach based Beach City Hoops Alex  “AC” Carmon who had this to say about Askew, “Devin Askew is a guard beyond his years.. carries himself on the court with excellent poise and IQ.. can attack the paint, knock down the jumper, all that, youngster got GAME!”
