Arizona Softball: Wildcats sweep GCU on Senior Day
By David Rosen
The Arizona Wildcats softball team got their sweep on this past weekend over the GCU Antelopes. Nothing like a good ol ‘sweep’ in May.
After going through a rough patch and losing seven straight games against top quality Pac-12 opponents last month, Arizona Wildcats softball has since got their mojo back, winning 11 of their last 12 games. At No.10 in the country, the Wildcats showed why they’re one of the top teams and contenders as they head into the post season.
In what was a hot weekend in Tucson, the Wildcats scorched their opponents over the course of three games. They outscored and kept their opponents off the scoreboard 18-0 and out hit them 22-10. Two of the three games ended because of the mercy rule, which many Wildcats opponents are well familiar with.

The way this series went couldn’t have been scripted any better. It would be the last home stand of the 2017-18 season, and it was senior weekend. It was hopefully one of the last home series in the current Hillenbrand Stadium, before it gets much needed upgrades for the 2018-19 season.
Game one was close, as the Wildcats clawed their way to a 1-0 victory. The difference in this one was the stellar pitching by both Taylor McQuillin and Alyssa Denham and a home run by sophomore Malia Martinez, which was her fourth of the year.
Game two, the Wildcats poured it on! Homer run, after home run, after home run as the Wildcats gave the Antelopes no chance what so ever. Both sophomore Jessie Harper and Alyssa Palomino had multiple homers, plus freshman Jenna Kean got into the action with her first home run of the season, which ended up be a walk off homer! Denham got the start and allowed just four hits and striking out fiver. Cats won 9-0 in six innings.
Game three was more of the same. Hits, home runs and solid pitching by McQuillin led to the Wildcats 8-0 win, in five innings, on senior day. Sophomore catcher Dejah Muliopa was the starter for the game, going 2-4 from the plate, including a home run. McQuillin only allowed three hits and had seven strikeouts, improving her season record to 24-9.
All three seniors, Aleah Creighton, Robyn Porter and Ashleigh Hughes, got to see action today in their last home game of their Wildcat career.
The Wildcats now improve their overall record to 38-13, 11-10 in Pac-12 conference play and have won nine straight. Next up is the last series of the season as they face the Stanford Cardinal on the road next Thursday – Saturday on the Pac-12 network.
