Four-star sophomore guard Devonaire Doutrive confirms his transfer from Arizona Basketball.

After an up and down season, four-star commit Devonaire Doutrive confirmed his transfer from Arizona Basketball. There had been much speculation that he may be one of those players leaving after this past season. It was officially confirmed that he was transferring as the following statement was made by his trainer and guardian Laurian Watkins, “He is looking for a spot that’s more suitable for him going forward,” Watkins said via text message. “U of A was awesome just not the best fit for him!”

Watkins also had this to say about Doutrive and we couldn’t agree more!

"“He’s a good kid. Hopefully we will find the right fit that will allow him to show his talents.”"

Doutrive was one of the first commits for the Class of 2018, but is now one of the first to announce he is leaving Arizona (still no official word on Brandon Randolph decision to come back or not). Listed as a four-star guard, he had much potential to be a great player. Unfortunately it was one of those situations in which he didn’t see much playing time because of he was having to come off the bench and play behind Brandon Randolph and Dylan Smith at the shooting guard position. Also, Coach Sean Miller typically doesn’t utilize a deep bench unless he has to, such as starters are out due to injury or players in foul trouble.

Listed as a shooting guard at 6 foot 5 and 175 pounds, there was certainly opportunity for him to put on a little more muscle. As a freshman though, it is expected that it takes a few seasons to add on that needed to strength to compete at the college level. Being slightly undersized, didn’t stop him from taking advantage of his minutes and competing.

In the 26 games Doutrive played, he averaged 3.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game played. Doutrive recorded a season high 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals against California at home. He didn’t get a chance to start any of the games he had played, but wouldn’t have been a bad idea considering the energy and excitement he brought to the floor.

Doutrive did provide Wildcat fans the highlight of the year with his buzzer beater put back win against Oregon State on the road!

Throughout the season, when he was out on the floor he provided Wildcat fans with “are you kidding me” moves. It was almost as if he was teasing fans with his creative play making abilities. Fans wanted to see more of it, but never truly got to see the full potential that Doutrive can bring.

Now that Doutrive is leaving, that puts Arizona Basketball at 13 scholarships players, possibly 14 if Brandon Randolph comes back. What happens next, who knows? Stayed tuned in with Zona Zealots provide you with the latest breaking news and updates with Wildcat basketball.
