Arizona Women’s Basketball looks to remain undefeated
By David Rosen
Arizona Women’s Basketball is having it’s the best start ever at 10-0 and they look to remain undefeated as they take on UCSB this afternoon.
Undefeated. Only 11 teams can say they are still undefeated this year in women’s college basketball. The Arizona Women’s Basketball team is one of those. At 10-0, they have straight up been dominating their opponents with an average margin of victory of 31.3 points per game. Included in this historic season is a 25 point win on the road against at the time No.22 ranked Texas.
Last season they were WNIT Champions and this season they are looking to make some noise during March Madness. First, the Wildcats must past the test against one of the best conferences in women’s basketball, the Pac-12. They open up play on the road against ASU on December 29th.
Before the Wildcats begin conference play though they take on UCSB at home today at 1pm MST. The Gauchos are currently 4-7 on the season and do have one of those wins against a Pac-12 school, USC. They haven’t though taken on a team like Arizona that never lets off the gas pedal. Wildcats heavily favored in this one as long as they continue their dominating ways.

There are many reasons why this team remains undefeated, one of those being Aari McDonald. She has continued to left off where she did last season leading the team in scoring with 19.8 points per game. Plus, she also leads the team in assists with 3.6 per game.
Sophomore sensation Cate Reese is right behind her, second in scoring with 15.2 points per game and is the leading rebounder for the Wildcats. Her intensity and willingness to attack the glass and the pain have led to her being of the key reasons the Wildcats have been dominating this season.
One of the other main reasons for their success this season has been their smoldering defense. As a team, they are averaging 12.2 steals per game! Double digits in steals, wow. That kind of production on defense has led to many easy fast-break points and has also contributed to their overall point production per game, 75.1.
Let’s not forget the three-point shooting. They are averaging 35.1% for the season and when this team catches on fire from three, good luck. It forces their opponent to close out on three, but then they have to deal with McDonald attacking the basket.
Overall, head coach Adia Barnes has done a magnificent job this season. She has had to deal with a couple of injuries, but like the men’s basketball team, she has the depth this season to go to her bench and get production out of them.
How long can the Arizona Women’s Basketball team remain undefeated? What they have accomplished this season has been exciting to watch. This team is for real this season and opponents better not sleep on them because they are looking to just not win, but to dominate. At Zona Zealots, we are extremely proud of this team. Keep on winning ladies! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
