Former Arizona Wildcat and two-way NBA contract signee Allonzo Trier signed a two-year NBA contract with the New York Knicks.
It’s official! The New York Knicks signed two-way contract signee Allonzo Trier to a two-year, $7 million NBA contract. After going undrafted and then signed to a two-way contract by the Knicks, Trier has taken advantage of the opportunity Knicks head coach David Fizdale has given him and played consistently well in the NBA. Like the Arizona Wildcats do on a consistent basis, Zo has been proving his doubters wrong.
Trier has played in 27 games for the Knicks and has started in three of them. He is currently averaging 11.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Trier is shooting 47% from the field, 39.3% from three and 81.6% from the free throw line. In addition, he is averaging 23.3 minutes per game. When Trier is on the floor, he is living up to his name, creating his own shots providing productive minutes for the Knicks.

In addition, he has had four 20+ plus point games. Overall, he has scored in double-digits in 13 games played. As a rookie, putting up stats like that is incredible and deserving of a NBA contract. Glad it finally happened!
At Arizona, Trier excelled the most when he was in isolation. Whether it was a quick crossover that led to an aggressive take to the rim or a step back three, he made it challenging for his opponents to figure out how to guard him. He is doing the same in the NBA.
Per two-way NBA contract rules, players can play up to 45 days with an NBA team. With Trier getting close to that mark, the Knicks made the decision to sign him. The Knicks Had to cut Ron Baker, who played in 14 games this season and was only averaging 3.3 points per game in three season played to make room on the roster for Trier.

Hopefully another two-way player, Rawle Alkins, will soon get that same opportunity as well as he has been on fire of late with the Windy City Bulls in the G-League. Alkins has played in 17 games and started in 14 of them. He is averaging 15.7 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game and 3.1 assist per game. In one game this season, he put up 31 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three blocks- savagelife!
With the signing of Trier, that now makes 11 former Wildcats that have official NBA contracts. It seems like just yesterday when Trier was not drafted in the NBA Draft, which was a surprise to most. Fast forward to the present and he was able to earn himself an NBA contract. It didn’t go down the way he had probably wanted it to but in the end he was able to achieve the ultimate goal of playing in the NBA and earning a salary worthy of a high draft pick.
Trier’s personality and style of play suits the New York Knicks well. His ability to put the ball on the floor and spot up from three, makes him valuable asset to the Knicks organization. They currently have less then $30 million dollar in cap space and will need to have at least $32-$39 million to acquire a free agent of at least seven years of experience. Hopefully with the signing of Trier, it’s the first step the Knicks will take to putting together a playoff team.
At Zona Zealots we would like to congratulate Allonzo Trier on a much deserved two-year NBA contract with the New York Knicks. Zo is just another reason why the Arizona Wildcat basketball program is one of the top colleges that produces top talent. Bear Down Arizona!
