Arizona Basketball has a lot of great shooters on the roster this season, but there are five that standout.

When it comes to winning, teams need to have a solid group of shooters. Defense is important, but you can’t win if you don’t shoot and make shots. Last season there was a lot of talented players for Arizona Basketball, but only a few who were pure shooters. This upcoming season is going to be much different.

As a team, the Wildcats ranked 11th in field goal shooting and 6th in three-point shooting in conference play last year. Ira Lee led the team from the field, shooting 61.7%, while Devonaire Doutrive and Ryan Luther led the team from three. Overall the lack of shooters and lack of confidence contributed to the limited success the team had.

There were though two that stood out, Brandon Williams and Luther. Both were confident with their shot and not afraid to take the open three and knock it down. Down the stretch, Lee started to gain confidence, which the Wildcats will need him to continue to do into next season.

With the three-point line a little farther back this season, it will open up options for many teams. For the Wildcats, they have incoming talent that has the ability to shoot from the long-range. Opponents will be forced to respect the Wildcats three-point shooting, which will lead to high percentage shooting in the paint.

Confidence and the willingness to shoot the ball when open is one of the qualities that makes up a great shooter. The create to great one’s own shot is another quality a top shooter possess.

The Top 5 shooters this season in order are:

  1. Nico Mannion
  2. Brandon Williams
  3. Josh Green
  4. Max Hazzard
  5. Zeke Nnaji

It’s no coincidence that three or even four of these player could make up the starting rotation. Depending on how the season plays out, some may get more shots than others. At the end of the day though, the Wildcats points per game will increase. Last season they finished 10th in conference play with 69.0 and nationally finished 223rd with 70.9 points per game.
